The Expedition

Trip Overview

Gearhaus Roadtrip I brought together 50+ cars for Kenya's first organized convoy of its kind. A 1,000km+ loop through the escarpment, Mau Forest and sugarcane country on Day 1, then back via what turned out to be the most scenic road in Kenya on Day 2: the Kerio Valley descent through Cheploch Gorge, across the Rift Valley floor to Nakuru for lunch, then back home via Nyahururu and Nyeri. 14 counties in 2 days. Lead car, sweeper car, marshalls, recovery rig, a doctor and a film crew the whole way. This was the convoy that made it clear this community was something real.

  • First ever Gearhaus organized convoy
  • 50+ cars from the car community
  • Day 1: 480km, starting from Nairobi to Eldoret via Narok, Kericho and Nandi Hills
  • Day 2: 550km, starting from Eldoret to Nairobi via the Kerio Valley, Nyahururu and Nyeri
  • One night spent in Eldoret town
  • Lead car, sweeper car, full recovery rig, and on-convoy mechanics throughout
  • Doctor on standby for both days
  • Film crew documenting every kilometer

Itinerary

  1. An early start before sunrise. Up through the Rift, across Mau Forest, through sugarcane country and into Eldoret by mid-afternoon.

    05:00- Total Gitaru, Nairobi15:00- Rupa's Mall, Eldoret

1st Leg: Nairobi → Mai Mahiu → Narok

    • 40 min stop at Quickmart Narok.
    • There is sufficient parking for everyone.
    • You can buy your morning coffee and snack from Quickmart or Artcaffe which is a few meters down the road.
    • There are speed cops on this stretch of road so please do not drive at anything over 100km/h, especially where the road tempts you to do so.
    • Top up fuel here if your car is one of those that love to drink.

    2nd Leg: Mau Narok → Njoro → Elburgon → Molo → Kericho

    • We will have two stops in Kericho, one for photos and views just before Kericho Town and a health break in Kericho Town at Greensquare Mall.
    • Each stop will be 20 minutes.
    • There are speed cops on this stretch of road as well, especially in the 50 km/h zones.
    • Watch out for random potholes, narrow stretches of road, fog and unmarked bumps.

3rd Leg: Awasi → Chemelil → Nandi Hills

    • We may stop in a coordinated manner somewhere in Nandi Hills for views. The road shoulder is quite narrow so only few cars can fit at any given point without disrupting traffic. We will see how possible it is to coordinate this.
    • Watch out for very slow sugarcane tractors and very sharp twisties in this section.

4th and Final Leg: Kapsabet → Eldoret (Rupa's Mall)

    • Nothing interesting here. Just a very narrow road, so be careful and watch out for motorbikes.

Did the 1000km in my Mazda Axela and she didn't miss a beat. The Kerio Valley descent on Day 2 was something else, nothing prepares you for that road. The convoy organisation was tight from start to finish. Already counting down to the next one
