The Expedition

Trip Overview

80+ cars. 1,500km+ of road that very few Kenyan convoys have ever attempted. Gearhaus Roadtrip II took the community from Nairobi through the Northern Frontier, past Isiolo, up through Marsabit and all the way to the Moyale-Ethiopia border. The Northern Frontier is remote, hardly explored, and yet so rewarding. This was not a Sunday drive. It was a full expedition with comms, security, a doctor, a recovery rig and several mechanics on standby the entire way.

  • First ever all-inclusive organized convoy to the Ethiopian border
  • 80+ cars from the car community
  • Day 1: 520km, starting from Nairobi to Marsabit via Nyeri, Nanyuki and Isiolo
  • Day 2: 520km, starting from Marsabit all the way to the Moyale-Ethiopia border
  • Day 3: 520km, starting from Marsabit to Nairobi via Isiolo, Nanyuki and Sagana
  • Two nights spent in Marsabit town
  • Lead car, sweeper car, security car, full recovery rigs, and on-convoy mechanics throughout
  • Doctor on standby for all three days
  • Full film and photography documentation featured on the Gearhaus YouTube channel

Itinerary

  1. An early start heading north through the highlands, past Mount Kenya and into the Northern Frontier.

06:00- Shell Survey, Nairobi15:00- Total Marsabit

    1st Leg: Nairobi → Delview → Nyoka Nyoka → Kangema → Othaya → Nyeri

    • 15 min stop at Rubis King'ong'o in Nyeri to wait for drivers who are behind.
    • Watch out for random potholes and unmarked bumps between Kangema and Othaya.
    • Watch out for very sharp corners and beautiful views that may distract you from the road on the Nyoka Nyoka stretch.

    2nd Leg: Nyeri → Nanyuki

    • 1 hr breakfast stop at Artcaffe Nanyuki.
    • Watch out for very sharp corners in the Kiganjo twisties section after Nyeri town and bumps in the small towns between Nyeri and Nanyuki.
    • Fueling your tank to max at Nanyuki is mandatory. Past Timau, there are no more reliable fuel stations, especially for drivers who need V-Power.
    • Check your tyres and drop your pressure to 30 PSI to allow for heat expansion as we go to the hotter regions of the North.

    3rd Leg: Nanyuki → Isiolo → Ololokwe

    • 30-minute photo stop at Ololokwe.
    • Beware of passing vehicles.

4th and Final Leg: Ololokwe → Laisamis → Marsabit

    • Temperatures will reach 30°C as we approach Marsabit - stay hydrated.
    • Goats, sheep, cows, camels. When you see them, slow down and put your hazards on. The locals can be very hostile if you hit their animals. Cars have been stoned for this. Animals and water are more precious than money in this area.
    • We will be doing sustained triple-digit speeds - keep distance with the car ahead.
    • This section has crosswinds, which are invisible and sudden. Even stable cars have rolled here. Do not tempt fate.
